CULTURAL COMPETENCY PRACTICES FOR ANTI-BIAS EDUCATION:
Culture is central to student learning.

The link between culture and classroom instruction is derived from evidence that cultural practices shape thinking processes, which serve as tools for learning within and outside of school. Creating classroom environments that reflect diversity, equity and justice, as well as engaging families and communities in ways that are meaningful and culturally competent is key to flourishing students and an inclusive school environment.

These professional development trainings support reflection in socio-emotional learning In the classroom, the institution, and school community as well as self discovery for educators and administrators.

We offer 6 critical practices to help teachers and administrators effectively implement culturally responsive components in their own practice.

  • Social-emotional interventions- focus on non-cognitive factors and assignments that target students’ thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in and about school

  • Implicit Bias- uncovering bias that we harbor unintentionally and methodologies to circumvent them

  • Risk tolerance classrooms- supports inquiry and critical thinking, and allows students to explore, make mistakes, find solutions, and iterate on those solutions, all in an open learning environment.

  • Cultural responsiveness-  methods for teaching about the mainstream culture while valuing, recognizing and incorporating the students' own cultures to impart knowledge, skills and empowering attitudes

  • Restorative discipline- examining the biased and destructive nature of some discipline trends while introducing alternative positive classroom management techniques
